Brush Unit Witnesses Head-On Collision then Extinguishes Auto Fire

January 13th, 2008

While returning from a detail, Brush 472 was on Papermill Road waiting at the Four Corners traffic light heading back to the station. At 1435 hours, while awaiting a green light, the crew on B472 witnessed a head on collision right in front of them. The crew exited the vehicle and began assessing the condition of all of those involved. A total of two people in one car and two in another were complaining of injuries. This information was reported to dispatch and a call was generated. This brought IV475 and E473 to the scene. Further evaluation found that a second medic unit would be needed to transport all patients to the hospital. A significant amount of fluids were cleaned up and prevented from entering nearby drains.

While two patients were transported and crews were waiting for the second transport unit to arrive, a number of individuals driving past the scene reported an automobile on fire in front of the Safeway. One member was left at the scene awaiting M17 while B472 responded to the Manor Shopping Center. Brush 472 arrived to find a late model SUV in front of Henrys Bistro with a fire in the engine compartment. This was reported to dispatch and a second call was generated. The crew used an extinguisher and the water carried onboard to hold the fire in check until the arrival of E473. The fire was then quickly knocked down.
