Convertible vs. Pole on Sweet Air Road (Rescue Box 47-13)

April 8th, 2005

Early Friday morning, Jacksonville was dispatched for a reported vehicle into a telephone pole. Paramedic 475 arrived at the intersection of Sweet Air Road and Green Road to find a blue 1970 Pontiac Catalina convertible in a field with one patient heavily trapped and the steering column impaled the patient’s chest. Engine 473’s crew quickly arrived and began extrication. Extrication time was approximately 45 minutes. A helicopter was requested because the patient had many life-threatening injuries, but was unavailable due to the weather. Paramedic 475 consulted and made a rapid transport to the trauma center. A total of nine personnel from Jacksonville operated on the scene with an additional two personnel standing by at the station.
